Few battleships had as big an impact on the outcome of WWII's Pacific war than the USS North Carolina. Commissioned in 1941, just months before Pearl Harbor, it served as carrier escort for the Saratoga and Hornet and participated in nearly every major battle in Solomon's campaign. Later in the war, its massive guns were employed against Tokyo's industrial sites.
