In the Mustang's first year, Carroll Shelby modified between 500 and 600 GT350's at his makeshift Los Angeles plant. However, 36 were set aside to become competition models, the GT350R. Weight - the racer's enemy - was the main target and the “R” model came in weighing nearly 500 pounds less then its street counterpart through the removal of many items including radio, heater/defroster, insulation, even the hood latch which made those hood pins functional instead of decorative. Most notable was the removal of both factory bumpers, the front being replaced with a fiberglass apron with built-in cooling ducts.
