In 1951, the M-47 Patton that was built for the Korean War took over from the renowned M4 Sherman used by the US forces and was the first NATO standard tank. From 1956 the newly formed Federal German Army also received 1,109 of the M-47 Patton battle tank. These first battle tanks enabled the German army to set up a new tank corps. Intended by the USA only as an interim solution, its solid basic construction kept it in service for many years with second and third hand users, sometimes into the 1990s. In total between 1951 and 1953 about 8,576 of the M-47 Patton were built in the USA.
