The frigate was the 18th century equivalent of the cruiser, used for a wide variety of roles from fleet reconnaissance to patrolling the sea lanes. Launched in 1794, the 38-gun Diana was typical of the British frigates of the period. Her career spanned virtually all the French Revolutionary and Napoleon Wars. In 1815 she was sold to the Dutch Navy, which she continued to serve until a fire destroyed her in 1839.
Diana Frigate kit by OcCre is an accurate scale representation of this historic vessel. Construction is single plank-on-bulkhead. All wooden parts are laser cut for ease of assembly. The fittings package consists of hundreds of parts too numerous to mention. Cannon barrels, bell, rudder hinges, eyebolts, rings are brass. Figurehead, bell tower and bell, helm, anchors, two ship’s boats, belaying pins, and waist railing newel posts are cleanly cast white metal. Gilded metal is used for gun carriages, gun ports and frames. Four diameters of rigging form the lines and pre-sewn cloth sails are ready to rig.
OcCre provides seven sheets of plans, clearly written English instructions and over 100 photos of every step of construction make building Diana a pleasure.
