In 1943, twenty-five Challengers arrived at the UP and six went to the Rio Grande. The locomotives were nearly identical to a revamped design developed only two years before. On the Baldwin-dominated Rio Grande, the Challengers were not well received and the six leased locomotives went back to the WPB (War Production Board)after the war.
