Avia S-199 was a single seat, single engine monoplane of metal construction with classic two-wheel retractable undercarriage, with fixed tail wheel. The fuselage formed a metal. semi-skin of elliptic shape. The cockpit canopy was one piece blown `bubble' hood. The cabin was not pressurised. The two-part wing was of one main spar construction, covered with metal sheets. The flaps operated mechanically while the slots automatically. The ailerons and the rudders were fabric covered. The radio equipment consisted of LR-16 (originally FuG 16ZY) for air-to air and air-to-ground communications, and radio direction finder, plus LR-25 (or FuG 25a) I.F.F. radio (identification friend or foe). To the LR-16 belonged the wire-type aerials and D/F 100p, for LR-25 a special aerial beneath the wing. Power plant: one Junkers JUMO 211 F 12 cylinder inverted-vee liquid cooled engine with reduction gear, rated at 1420 hp by 2600 RPM, or JUMO 211J rated at 1420 hp by 2600 RPM. The wooden three blade airscrew was operated hydraulically. Armament: two 13 mm Rheinmetal-Borsig MG-131 fuselage-mounted machine guns and two 20 mm Mauser MG-151/20 in under wing gondolas. By some S-199s the wing armament was or omitted or replaced by 7,92 mm MG-17 machine guns. Beneath the fuselage a rack for a single 250 kg bomb, or four 70 kg bombs, pr for a 300 litres drop tank could be placed. The main fuel tanks inside the fuselage had a capacity 400 plus 120 litres.
