The development of the Mil Mi-4 started in 1951 after the Soviet Air Force Command had evaluated experiences on the use of helicopters in Korean War. American Helicopter Sikorsky S-55 provided the later direction of the development of the Mi-4. Due to engine difficulties, the technical and tactical data were changed for using the Shvetsov ASh-82V (vertolotnyj) engine, used in La-5F, FN and La-7 Soviet fighters. The use of this engine made it possible for the Mi-4 to accomplish high performance at that time. it was able to carry an internal load of 1.600 kg and an external load 1.000 kg. The rear clamshell doors permitted a light mobile vehicle such as the Gaz-69, or an anti-tank gun to be carried. The Helicopter could also transport 10-12 paratroops. The development and construction of the prototype were completed in May 1952, at which time the factory tests started. During the tests main rotor blade flutter resulted in the crash of the prototype. This problem was corrected by modifying the mounting of the all metal rotor blades. As a result the first Soviet transport regiments to be armed with Mi-4 were introduced to public at the Air Show in Tushino in 1954. The first Mi-4 was delivered to Czechoslovak Air Force in 1956.

The Mi-4 is designed to carry troops and equipment and to operate in a combat environment. There were other versions of the Mi-4 e.g. Mi-4P for Aeroflot passenger and cargo, Mi-4L a VIP version for 6 passengers, Mi-4S for agriculture USE, etc.

The Mi-4 Helicopter is designed to fly in all climatic areas due to service ability and it' s robust construction. It had high performance and operated well in extreme situations under severe weather conditions and environments. The Mi-4 was a very efficient Helicopter during the 1950s and 60s. It was used by more than 30 countries.
