For many years the Mig-21 belonged to the best aircraft of its category in the world. They were and still are the backbone of the fighter air forces of the Warshaw Pact countries and further allied countries. The development of the MiG-21 started in 1953. It was designed by the team of Artem Ivanovich Mikoyan and its design-conception is based on its successful predecessors MiG- 15,17 and 19. The direct forerunner of MiG-2l was the plane E4, which made its maiden flight on June 16, 1956, with test pilot G.A. Sedov at the controls. The flight-test of the further prototypes E2A, E5, E6 confirmed, that the airplane with the new delta wing has all necessary parametres. During the development of MiG-21 they designed a new turbojet engine R-I 1 of J.K. Tumansky. Flight tests of E-66 and E66A prototypes continued, with which a number of international records were reached. The results of these tests were applied on the series-production MiG-21x. MiG-21 MF version was developed from its predecessors of F,PF,PFM and PFMA versions, however the basic concept was preserved. The outer shape of MiG-21 MF looks more robust, the main differences being electronic equipment, engine, undercarriage, cockpit-equipment and armaments systems. This aircraft enabled it to be used as an outstanding and effective all-weather interceptor since 1970. The armament consists of a double gun GSH 23, AAMs, bombs and modern electronic equipment, what enables an effective operational service by all-weather conditions.
