In 1984, the ARR joined the ranks of the RDC owning railroads, purchasing and refitting two of SEPTA's RDC cars. Originally New Haven RDC-3's, SEPTA rebuilt them as RDC-1's before finally being transformed into RDC-2's for the Alaska Railroad. These two RDCs were successful enough that in 1986, the Alaska railroad purchased three more RDCs to add to its ranks.
