Frederic Dumain, Jr., having succeeded his father in 1915 as the head of the New Haven railroad, had the idea that new equipment would serve to bolster interest and popularity for the New Haven lines. This resulted in the purchasing of no less than 40 RDCs, referred to as "Shoreliners," replacing 16 diesel locos, 3 gas electric motor cars, 46 coaches, 9 mail cars, 9 baggage cars, and the Comet train with 29 RDC-1s, 2 RDC-2s, 6 RDC-3s, and 3 RDC-4's. New Haven's RDCs ran an accumulated total of 918.5 route-miles by January of 1955, with more than 65% of its passenger service being covered by RDCs and averaging 325 miles a day per RDC. |
