This book is the fruit of some thirty-five years of intensive research into the Fokker Dr.I by its author, an internationally acknowledged authority on the subject. It provides a collection of unique photographs, scale drawings and colored illustrations of the triplane, together with information on many aspects of the aircraft’s history, much of which has not been published previously. It serves as an invaluable and essential reference source to those who study the history of air warfare as well as to aircraft modellers.
Rittmeister Manfred von Richthofen, the legendary German fighter pilot who has gone down in aviation history as the ‘Red Baron’, once described Anthony Fokker’s Dr.I triplane to his pilots thus: “…(they) climbed like monkeys and were as maneuverable as the devil.” Von Richthofen went on to become the highest-scoring fighter pilot of World War One, shooting down 19 enemy aircraft while flying the Fokker Dr.I triplane.
The Fokker Dr.I triplane was made famous by the pilots who flew it and, in some cases, died in it. These included the legendary von Richthofen, the highest-scoring fighter pilot of World War One and also Leutnant Werner Voss, whose epic fight with the ace pilots of 56 and 60 Squadrons of the Royal Flying Corps left most of the opposing British aircraft severely damaged before Voss was eventually killed by Lieutenant Arthur Rhys Davids of 56 Squadron.
Paul Leaman has sought out information, historical documents and photographs covering all aspects of the Fokker Dr.I for more than thirty-five years. In this book he presents probably the most comprehensive account of this fascinating aircraft ever produced.
With aid of more than 450 photographs, plus a range of detailed technical drawings and color artwork, the author relates the story of the development, construction, pilots, deployment and flight characteristics of the Fokker triplane. Additionally, there is an in depth study of colouring and unit and individual aircraft markings. Appendices cover victories, armament, production batches and performance data.
