The prototype was inexpensive, easily set up or moved, and adaptable to many uses. Lumbering operations and quarries used them in large numbers,and some may still be found alongside the spurs of branchline industries. The functional simplicity of the derrick's design combined with the many cast fittings and prominent gear train assembly make this an unusually appealing model. And with only minor modification, it is possible to power the unit from under the table. The complete kit includes 36 clean, detailed castings,wood beams, wire and cord - everything to build this simple, but unique model.

For realism, the derrick requires a minimum clear working area of 4 inches by 7 inches.
