The M10 Tank Destroyer first entered operational service in North Africa 1943. Due to its overweight 3 inch gun resulted in an unbalanced turret arrangement, its turret ring was likely to be damaged when the vehicle travelling on rough terrains. To improve the situation, the late models were equipped with enlarged rear turred space, as well as extended countervwight armour.
Due to its open turret layout, the M10 crews were especially vulnerable tosnipers. To rectify this problem, the 536th Ordnance Heavy MaintenanceCompany offered armour top covers for late model M10s, which allows 360-degree views, as a mean of crew protection.
